Dr. Chew

L. Kenneth Chew, Jr., Psy.D., HSPP

Director, Indiana State University Student Counseling Center
Dr. Chew received his doctorate from the Virginia Consortium Program in Clinical Psychology after completing undergraduate work at Jamestown College.  Prior to Indiana State University (ISU), he worked for 2 years testing children and adolescents for learning and emotional disabilities in Washington, D.C..  He began at the ISU Student Counseling Center in 2002 and became Director 2007.  In addition to his role as Director, he coordinates substance programming, is the Director of Clinical Training at his center, and runs the Performance Excellence Program.  Between 2009 and 2016, Dr. Chew oversaw most medical services for ISU, facilitated the Student Affairs Behavior Assessment Team, and served as the HIPPA compliance officer for the university.  In the fall of 2014, he was awarded the ISU University Medallion, which is the highest level faculty/staff recognition at ISU. 

His professional interests include the counseling of athletes, performance enhancement, drug and alcohol issues, multicultural counseling, facilitation of professional and personal development training, and outreach programming. He has been at ISU since January of 2002

Outside of ISU, he frequently presents or facilitates programs on topics related to diversity and the mental health issues of student-athletes.  Dr. Chew was among the first group of psychologists brought together by the NCAA in 2005 to discuss the mental health issues of student-athletes; and that meeting subsequently became the Big Sky Sport Psychology Retreat.  He was part of the 2013 NCAA Mental Health Task Force and the 2017 Mental Health Task Force 2.0; and in 2020, he was part of the NCAA’s Diverse Student-Athlete Mental Health Summit as both a participant and member of the planning committee.  As a continuation of his work with the Mental Health Task Force, he authored a chapter in “Mind, Body and Sport:  Understanding and Supporting Student-Athlete Mental Wellness” and contributed to the Best Practices document. 

 

Trista Gibbons

Trista Gibbons, LMFT
Associate Director
Trista Gibbons is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and she became the Associate Director of the SCC the summer of 2011.  Trista acts as the primary supervisor of the master’s level counseling interns, she supervises the management of the front office and she coordinates our clinical services.  She has a Masters degree in counseling psychology from the Alfred Adler Graduate School in Minnesota, and a Bachelors degree in psychology and family studies from St. Olaf College in Minnesota.  Trista has experience and training in working with survivors of sexual violence, childhood and family trauma, and relationship issues. Her professional experience prior to working at ISU includes; coordinating and implementing direct services at the Sexual Violence Center in Minneapolis MN and working with children and families at Hamilton Center community mental health. Her professional interests include women’s issues, LGBTQ+ issues, trauma, relationships and couples counseling, Christian counseling, and working with survivors of sexual violence. 

 

Caroline Blower, MSW, LCSW
Assistant Director
Caroline Blower  is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) and is the Assistant Director of the SCC.  She received her Master's and Bachelor’s degree in social work from Indiana State University. She has experience working with individuals, groups, families, and children. Her professional experience includes working in crisis and inpatient setting as well as in the outpatient setting. Her clinical interests include trauma, crisis work, and mood & anxiety disorders, autism spectrum disorder, and obsessive compulsive disorder. She uses an eclectic, integrated approach to therapy by drawing on different models and evidence based practices to meet the needs of the client. Her approach is primarily rooted in constructivist, attachment, and ecological/systemic theories. Caroline enjoys working with a variety of populations including LGBTQIA+ individuals. She works closely with LGBTQ Resource Center on campus as well as The Pride Center of Terre Haute. She assists with coordinating outreach events and the training program. Caroline enjoys spending time at home with her two cats Sybil and Odette. She likes to also spend her free time with friends and family, watching anime, going for long walks in nature, and wandering around antique malls.

 

Kathy Ginter

Kathy Boone Ginter Ph.D., LMHC
Staff Counselor
Dr. Ginter earned her Ph.D. with an emphasis in Sport Psychology, Motor Learning, Counseling, and Psychology from The University of Tennessee, Knoxville. She has a Master's degree with an emphasis in Sport Psychology and Counseling from Purdue University and a Master's degree in coaching, a certificate in counseling, and a bachelor's degree in Physical Education and Psychology from Indiana State University.  She is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor and a Certified Consultant with My Steady Mind. Her professional experiences also includes teaching, and coaching. Dr. Ginter specializes in BioFeedback, EMDR, Performance Enhancement, Focusing behaviors, and Grief and Loss. She spends her leisure time shooting competitive pool.

 

Austin Guoli, M.S., LMHCA
Staff Counselor 
Austin is an LMHCA working to full licensure and is a Staff Counselor at the SCC. He earned his Master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Indiana State University and his Bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Communications from Purdue University. His professional experience includes working with at-risk adolescents in a residential setting, college students, and adults. His clinical interests include anxiety, depression, trauma, anger management, men’s mental health, and issues stemming from gender norms. He uses an integrative approach by using evidence-based practices that are best suited for the client’s needs. His approach is based on Person-Centered/Humanistic theories. Austin is passionate about men’s mental health and challenging gender norms that can cause harm. He runs a men’s group at the SCC and connects with other organizations on campus such as Campus Ministries and SGA.  He enjoys spending time with his wife, and daughter, and their beagle Lyrix.  He also spends his free time working out at the rec center, being outdoors, spending time with friends, and talking about anything Star Wars or Marvel-related. 

 

Regina Walker M.S., LMHCA
Staff Counselor

Regina received her BS in Human Development and Family Studies from Indiana State University in 2019, then completed her MS in Clinical Mental Health Counseling also from Indiana State University in 2021. She has professional experience and training in working with adults, couples, children, families, and minority populations. Her professional experience includes working with anxiety, depression, communication issues, trauma, gender identity, relationship issues, and impulsive behaviors. Regina’s professional interested include relationships, family dynamics, multicultural counseling, along with personal growth and development. She enjoys spending time with her family, watching movies, and traveling.

 

Terena Weitkamp, M.S., LMHCA
Staff Counselor

Terena earned her Bachelor's degree in Psychology in 2020 and Master's degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling in 2022 from Indiana State University. Her professional experience includes working with kids, emerging adults, older adults, and college students from a variety of backgrounds. Her professional interests include processing trauma, anxiety, depression, ADHD, personal growth and development, communication issues, mindfulness, and relationships. 

Outside of work Terena enjoys spending time with her friends, family, and cats! She also enjoys leisure activities such as video games, arts and crafts, and watching shows/movies.

 

Krystal Billingsley, MA, LMHC
Staff Counselor
 
Krystal earned her Bachelor’s degree in Psychological Science in 2013 and Master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling in 2015, both from Ball State University. In her time in the field, Krystal has worked with a diverse population of clients including people of all ages and various cultural backgrounds in multiple levels of the mental health system and has experience with individual, group, and family therapy. Her areas of interest include eating disorders, body image, self-esteem, trauma, relationships, anxiety, depression, and adjustment issues.  Krystal uses an eclectic approach to therapy, utilizing several evidence-based practices in order to find what the best fit is for each client. She strives to create a safe, relaxed, and comfortable environment where clients can be challenged to take steps to meet their goals and embrace change. When not at work, Krystal enjoys spending time with her family, friends, and dog. She is a fan of music, animals, and all things Disney.

 

Theresa Ortega, B.S.
Office Manager

Theresa earned her Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Indiana State University in Dec. 2017, designing a unique Senior Research Proposal involving the use of handwriting analysis to detect ADHD in children’s handwriting. She manages our front-end office, all administrative operations, and works closely with our psychiatrist. Having grown up in Caracas, Venezuela, Theresa is fluent in Spanish and has worked with many affinity groups on campus for both students and staff/faculty since arriving in 2006. Prior to working at ISU, Theresa served for more than 20 years as an on-call Spanish Interpreter for local courts and law enforcement. Her experience as a business owner led her to her current part-time position as a Business Advisor with the West Central Indiana Small Business Development Center at the Scott College of Business. Theresa is a Black Belt in Taekwondo, a Certified Cursive Coach, a handwriting analyst, and enjoys muscle cars, weightlifting, technology, and Latin music. ¡Ella habla español por si acaso le ayude!

 

Lisa Duerlinger, A.S. 

Administrative Assistant
Lisa is a part-time Administrative Assistant and works at the front desk in the SCC. She has an A.S. in General Aviation Flight Technology from ISU and recently took 1 year of bookkeeping and payroll classes at Ivy Tech. She has previous work experience as an admin in a Physical Therapy clinic, Human Resources, Tax Preparation, Merchandising, and has a commercial pilot’s license.  She has many years of experience caring for her son with multiple disabilities. She also enjoys playing electronic keyboard and singing in the band at her church.
 

Regan Nara, A.S., B.S., MSOT/S
Graduate Assistant

Regan is a first-year graduate student in the Occupational Therapy Program at Indiana State University. In 2023, she received both her Associate of Science degree in Liberal Arts from Ivy Tech and Her Bachelor of Science Degree in Kinesiology from Purdue University. She enjoys volunteering, going on runs, horse-back riding, and any outdoor activity with her two dalmatians. She has been voted the representative of her graduate class and is involved in the Student Occupational Therapy Club (SOTA), Student Occupational Therapy Undergraduate Club (SOTUC), the Indiana Occupational Therapy Association (IOTA), The American Association of Occupational Therapy (AOTA), and the National AKC and CKC Therapy Dog Association. After graduation, Regan plans to return to her hometown of Attica, Indiana and provide therapy service opportunities to the rural community.
